On September 24, 2024, Viktor Murakhovsky reported that an unmanned tank utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) is being developed on the T-72 platform as part of the "Shturm" experimental design project, led by Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) under a commission from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

These unmanned
tanks are equipped with a range of sensors, including ultrasonic, visible, and
infrared systems, to enable autonomous convoy movement, terrain assessment, and
obstacle navigation. The tanks also feature an all-angle vision system powered
by AI and trainable neural networks, allowing them to assess situations and
make operational decisions, all while navigating natural and man-made obstacles
without human input.
Military expert
Yuri Knutov highlighted the potential impact of unmanned T-72 tanks on Russian
military operations. By reducing human exposure to danger, these tanks can be
remotely controlled, offering a safer alternative for troops under fire.
However, Knutov also mentioned that the introduction of these robots may
require revisions in the traditional use of tanks and armored vehicles,
particularly in light of the effectiveness of anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs)
in recent conflicts.
The use of unmanned tanks, such as the captured Ukrainian T-72AMT, now named "Vasya" by Russian forces, could also signal a shift in armored warfare tactics. Instead of deploying large numbers of vehicles in combat, smaller, more strategically deployed formations, such as a "tank carousel" of three vehicles, might become more effective in reducing vulnerability to anti-tank weapons, Knutov suggested. This tactical adjustment could be key in ensuring the effectiveness of armored units in future operations.

clearly indicates that the new unmanned tank project is in its final stages of
development. The vehicle has now begun undergoing field tests, with controlled
maneuvers being closely monitored to assess its operational capabilities. These
tests are crucial in fine-tuning the tank's AI systems, sensors, and autonomous
navigation technology, ensuring its ability to perform effectively in
real-world combat scenarios. The successful completion of these field tests is
expected to pave the way for the tank's integration into Russia's military
forces, potentially transforming battlefield dynamics and enhancing tactical
flexibility. The progression of the project marks a significant step towards
advanced unmanned warfare, where AI-driven vehicles could reduce risks to
personnel while maintaining combat effectiveness.
