Niger Expands Military Capabilities with Acquisition of Turkish Karayel-SU Drones

Niger is bolstering its defense forces with an $87.5 million order for five Turkish-made Lentatek Karayel-SU drones, along with associated equipment. This purchase by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) underscores Niger's expanding defense partnership with Turkey, marking a significant step in modernizing its military assets.

The Karayel-SU drones will enhance Niger's military capabilities, offering technical features on par with the Bayraktar TB2 drones already in use. Initially, the CNSP had contemplated acquiring additional TB2 drones but found the terms too costly, prompting a search for more budget-friendly alternatives. The Karayel-SU emerged as a viable option, providing similar functionality at a lower cost.

Produced by Lentatek, the Karayel-SU is a tactical Medium-Altitude, Long-Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial system actively used by Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Its advanced capabilities include an endurance of 20 hours, a service ceiling of 22,500 feet, and a range of 200 kilometers. It can carry out surveillance, target designation, and precision strike missions using a variety of guided munitions. The aircraft's four hard points enable it to carry multiple payloads, including precision-guided bombs, rockets, and missiles.

Niger's shift towards Turkish defense technology comes after unsuccessful negotiations with the UAE's EDGE Group, which offered drones at a price deemed excessive by the CNSP. The group's reluctance to deal with Niger's government, considered by some to be a putschist regime, further pushed Niger towards Turkish alternatives.

This purchase is part of Niger’s broader strategy to address serious security challenges posed by jihadist insurgents in the southeastern regions near Nigeria, where groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State affiliates are active. It follows previous acquisitions of Turkish military hardware, including the Bayraktar TB2 drones and Hurkus light attack aircraft, signaling Niger's continued investment in reliable and cost-effective defense solutions.

The Karayel-SU, with its expanded wings for better stability and fuel efficiency, is capable of real-time satellite communications, enhancing Niger's ability to conduct operations in remote areas. Its integrated EO/IR camera allows for precise targeting both day and night, making it a versatile asset in counterinsurgency efforts.
