The Moroccan Air Force is preparing to modernize its military transport capabilities with the anticipated arrival of Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft. This development was confirmed by a video at the C-390 Millennium Users Group Conference 2024, which featured Morocco’s flag alongside other operators, such as Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, and the Netherlands. The addition of Morocco to this list highlights the country's strategic move to replace its aging fleet of C-130 Hercules aircraft with the modern, versatile C-390, enhancing logistics and tactical airlift capacity.

The introduction
of the C-390 follows months of speculation about Morocco's interest in the
aircraft, fueled by reports of Moroccan military officials visiting Portugal.
Further confirmation emerged from promotional materials displaying Morocco’s
flag among other contracting nations. This acquisition is expected to not only
replace the older C-130 models but also expand the air force’s ability to carry
out a variety of missions, including cargo transport, troop deployment, and
medical evacuation.
The C-390 Millennium, Embraer's largest aircraft, was initially conceived in the mid-2000s as a faster, jet-powered alternative to the C-130, supported by a $440 million investment from the Brazilian government. The aircraft first flew in 2015, and in 2019, it was rebranded as the C-390 Millennium. The design integrates turbofan engines to achieve higher speeds and incorporates advanced avionics and fly-by-wire controls. Capable of transporting up to 26 tons of cargo or up to 80 soldiers, it offers medium air-lift capabilities suitable for modern military requirements.
Several countries
have adopted the C-390, leveraging its range of applications, including aerial
refueling and cargo airdrops. The Brazilian Air Force leads with 19 units,
while the Portuguese and Hungarian air forces have already begun receiving
deliveries. Future operators include Austria, the Czech Republic, and South
Korea, which have all placed orders for the aircraft.
While Morocco's
acquisition of the C-390 Millennium appears to bolster its military transport
capabilities, questions arise about the timing and scope of the procurement.
The decision to acquire high-speed, jet-powered transport aircraft may seem
ambitious given the country’s current defense budget constraints and other
pressing needs.
