In a recent demonstration, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) showcased the capabilities of the PCL-191, internationally recognized as the PHL-16 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The video highlighted the system's powerful firepower, featuring its ability to launch both 370mm guided rockets and 750mm tactical missiles with impressive precision. The PHL-16 boasts a missile range of up to 500 kilometers, significantly surpassing the American HIMARS, which reaches approximately 300 kilometers with its extended-range munitions.

One of the
PHL-16's key features is its modular launcher, allowing for easy adaptation to
various combat requirements. The system can be equipped with either eight 370mm
guided rockets or two 750mm Fire Dragon 480 tactical ballistic missiles,
providing flexibility based on mission demands. This versatility enables
commanders to deploy the appropriate loadout for either long-range strikes or
high-impact tactical engagements, enhancing operational effectiveness.
The 370mm guided
rockets, known for their precision, can deliver air-burst munitions that
detonate above targets, maximizing damage over a broad area. This makes them
highly effective against infantry, light vehicles, and air defenses, with a
range of up to 280 kilometers, allowing deep strikes while keeping the launcher
safe from counterattacks.
In its tactical configuration, the PHL-16 carries two 750mm Fire Dragon 480 ballistic missiles, each with a 500-kilometer range. These are designed to hit high-value targets, including command centers, critical infrastructure, and fortified military installations. The advanced guidance ensures both accuracy and destructive power, providing capabilities similar to short-range ballistic missiles but with greater payload versatility.
The system is
designed for rapid deployment, featuring automated reconfiguration for quick
transitions between rocket and missile setups. Mounted on a wheeled chassis,
the PHL-16 is highly mobile, capable of swiftly repositioning after firing to
avoid enemy counter strikes. This mobility and adaptability make it a
formidable asset in fast-paced combat scenarios.
With a combination
of long-range precision and substantial firepower, the PHL-16 serves both
offensive and defensive roles. Its advanced targeting systems allow for
accurate strikes while the extended range offers a significant standoff
distance, minimizing risk to the launcher. This capability is crucial for
China's anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) strategies in sensitive areas like the
South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, where it can target air defenses and
strategic sites from afar.
In modern warfare,
the PHL-16's precision and flexibility provide China with a tactical edge,
potentially outmatching other rocket systems worldwide. The 750mm Fire Dragon
missiles enhance their ability to penetrate fortified targets, offering a
powerful first-strike capability.
