The flight, involving the aircraft with the tail number TC-ÖZB3, followed a series of intensive ground tests, including engine run-ups, automatic taxi tests, and lift-off procedures, all critical steps in preparing the prototype for its inaugural flight. The operation was overseen by Selçuk Bayraktar, the President and Chief Technology Officer of Baykar, who underscored that this short test flight signals the start of a comprehensive testing process aimed at refining the drone’s capabilities. He expressed strong optimism for the future of the Kizilelma program, emphasizing that further testing will continue to improve the aircraft’s effectiveness for Turkey’s defense needs.

The latest prototype incorporates several technical advancements compared to earlier models. These include structural refinements, upgraded avionics, and the addition of an afterburner engine, which brings the aircraft closer to the speed of sound. With enhanced aerodynamics, the Kizilelma is capable of high-speed performance and complex maneuvers. Furthermore, the inclusion of AESA radar provides exceptional situational awareness, enabling the drone to conduct sophisticated combat missions.

Since its launch in 2021, the Kizilelma project has seen rapid progress, with Baykar driving the program entirely in-house. The first prototype was completed in November 2022, followed by its initial flight in December. This swift development illustrates Baykar’s commitment to advancing unmanned combat aircraft technology.

One of the standout features of the Kizilelma is its ability to take off and land on short-runway vessels like Turkey's TCG Anadolu, offering a strategic edge for overseas operations and bolstering Turkey’s maritime defense strategy, often referred to as the "Blue Homeland."

The success of the first flight of the Bayraktar Kizilelma’s production prototype marks a significant step forward in Turkey’s aspirations to become a leader in unmanned combat aviation and highlights the country’s growing prowess in aerospace innovation.
