With this
announcement, Australia’s total military assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s
large-scale invasion in February 2022 has surpassed $1.3 billion, while the
country's overall support now exceeds $1.5 billion. The addition of the M1A1
tanks will boost Ukraine’s firepower and mobility on the battlefield,
complementing military aid from other international partners.
Australian
Minister for Defense Industry and Capability Delivery, Pat Conroy, is set to
attend the NATO Defense Ministers' Meeting in Brussels to confirm the new
military aid package with his Ukrainian counterpart. The move underscores
Australia’s steadfast support for Ukraine and aims to help bring about an end
to the conflict on Ukraine’s terms.
The tanks being transferred come from Australia’s current inventory, which is undergoing an upgrade to the more advanced M1A2 Abrams SEP V3 models, as announced in January 2022. During this transition, the Australian Army will retain a limited number of M1A1 tanks to ensure military readiness while the M1A2 fleet is integrated.
In addition to
military hardware, Australia’s support extends to training Ukrainian military
personnel as part of Operation Kudu. This training initiative, carried out in
coordination with allied nations, seeks to improve the combat readiness of
Ukraine's forces and ensure effective use of the new equipment. The Albanese
Government has emphasized its dedication to providing sustainable support in
close collaboration with international partners, reinforcing Australia’s
commitment to global security and a rules-based international order.
While the
contribution of 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks is a considerable boost to Ukraine's
armored capabilities, there are questions about the effectiveness of this aid
considering the complexity of training, maintenance, and logistics associated
with operating these tanks. Additionally, the M1A1 is an older model that may
not offer the same technological edge as more modern tanks like the M1A2 SEP
V3.
also the already sent M1A1 SA-UKR Abrams didn’t do much in the battlefield and already
half of them is destroyed, this raises more concerns about sending tanks just
to get shredded by FPV drones and Kornet ATGMs.
