The US Air Force has approved two additional bases to host the B-21 Raider strategic bombers, with one located at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and the other at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas.  The B-21 Raider, introduced after the Cold War, is set to play a key role in the US nuclear triad, potentially replacing the B-2 Spirit. It is designed to carry both nuclear and precision conventional munitions. The stealth bomber, developed by Northrop Grumman, has been in testing since 2023, with its first test flight taking place at an Air Force facility in California.

General Thomas Bussier, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, which responsible the nuclear arsenal, said the command would continue testing the B-21 to ensure its readiness, then launch serial production, and have a strategic deterrent that can provide a decisive response as needed.

Aviators and defense industry representatives discussed the progress of the B-21 stealth bomber program this week at the Air Force and Space Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Defense conference in National Harbor, Maryland.

Thomas Jones, president of Northrop Grumman’s Aerospace Systems Division, said the B-21 program was conducting two test flights a week in preparation for its entry into service. According to most sources, the US Air Force will purchase at least 100 B-21 Rider strategic bombers, which will eventually replace the B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit bombers.
