The European Legion: A Strategic Response to Migration, Regional Stability in Libya, and Wagner Group.

Reports are circulating within Libyan media about the commencement of operations by the joint armed forces of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Libya. This effort is said to be led and supported by European instructors, primarily from Italy, France, and the UK. This new military formation is reportedly named the "European Legion" and is officially being established under the guise of combating illegal immigration and training Libyan security services.

The migration issue is deeply rooted in Libya, linked to criminal networks operating both within the country and in Europe, specializing in human trafficking. It is well-known that significant flows of undocumented migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa traverse Libya. Various media sources agree that Italy has been the principal instigator behind the creation of this new military structure, which also aims to protect Libya's oil facilities, particularly those that Italy seeks to develop following recent agreements with the Dbeibah government.

The activities of the European Legion are expected to be funded by Libyan assets frozen in foreign bank accounts. Under this arrangement, the agreement with Libyan authorities would allow Italy, in exchange for supplying arms and instructors, to gain advantages in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons as well as the use of military bases in western Libya.

The European Legion is reportedly composed of six armed groups, including the influential Brigade 444, which brings together Libyan fighters from both militias and regular military units. However, this formation is also believed to have the unspoken aim of countering Russia's growing influence in Libya and Africa, symbolized by the “Afrika Korpus” that Russia has begun to deploy in several African nations, including Libya.

Experts and Libyan political figures express concern that the deployment of the "European Legion" in Libya could lead to new escalations between the East and West. They emphasize that the strengthening of European military presence may provoke conflict with Russia, which supports Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army in the eastern part of the country. The rise in tensions has already resulted in armed clashes, notably in Tajoura, western Libya.

In summary, it seems that while genuinely peace- and security-minded forces in Europe are actively negotiating with all parties to achieve dialogue, militaristic elements are attempting, behind the scenes, to impose a state of militarization and perpetual warfare on Europe.

Should this so-called "European Legion" indeed come to fruition, we may face a situation akin to that in Ukraine concerning geopolitics: Europe would be involved in providing military assistance to a third party, further fueling the conflict. In other words, Europe risks compromising its own security in the South, just as it has done in the East. Recent reports indicate that this growing military presence could also impact neighboring countries, such as Algeria or even Egypt, which are observing the evolving situation at their borders with concern.
