Germany Boosts Military Aid to Ukraine with Leopard 1A5 Tanks and Gepard Air Defense Systems

On September 19, 2024, it was announced that a substantial new military aid package would be provided to Ukraine, including a range of armored vehicles, air defense systems, and other military equipment. This move highlights the ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst the conflict, with total assistance now reaching around €28 billion. The latest aid package includes 22 Leopard 1A5 tanks and three Cheetah self-propelled anti-aircraft systems designed to counter aerial threats like drones and cruise missiles.

The Cheetah system, a Dutch version of the German Gepard, are equipped with updated radar and fire control features, enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities. Alongside the tanks and air defense systems, the package also includes 22 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAP), two ground surveillance radars, and various drones and logistics vehicles.

Beyond immediate military support, the aid package also covers training and additional resources. Since the conflict began in February 2022, military supplies have been drawn from national stockpiles, with a replacement value estimated at €5.2 billion. More than 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have undergone training, with training-related expenses reaching approximately €282 million.

Additionally, commitments have been made to provide more heavy weaponry in the coming years, including 30 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers and various types of ammunition. The aid also features advanced unmanned systems, including 30 Vector reconnaissance drones and over 200,000 rounds of artillery ammunition to enhance Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities.

This support is part of a larger financial initiative, with approximately €7.1 billion allocated for 2024 alone, covering not only military supplies but also contributions to broader international efforts to assist Ukraine.
