The AN/AAQ-28(V) Litening targeting
pod is revolutionizing modern aerial combat. This advanced precision targeting
system is operational on a wide variety of aircraft across the globe, enhancing
their combat effectiveness.
Litening significantly boosts an aircraft's ability to attack ground targets with an array of standoff weapons, including laser-guided bombs, conventional bombs, and GPS-guided munitions.
The Israeli newspaper Walla wrote that:
“It is worth noting that in the video materials of the training of Ukrainian
pilots at the NATO training center in Romania, it can be seen that the aircraft
are equipped with the Litening system manufactured by Rafael. The laser
munition guidance system is capable of operating day and night and is equipped
with advanced sensors that are effective in difficult weather conditions.”
“One system detects a missile being launched at the plane and warns the pilot, so that he can maneuver and try to evade it.”
The article notes that
"supplying F-16s to Ukraine will allow it to more effectively counter
Russian aviation and Iranian drones, and the new equipment will increase their
chances of survival, including during attacks on the Russian rear areas."
This new technology can make the aircrafts very strong at lunching accurate and deadly strikes on Russian positions even in the Russian inside with western missiles and cruise missiles like Storm Shadow or Scalp or other guided and unguided bombs like JDAM and French Hammer.
